And even if you don't go with the D90, you can get a D80 with
18-135mm lens for a good price (even better probably if you go with
another vendor or get a used one like I did):

:) Just got the D80 (a couple weeks before the D90 was
announced...phooey), and I shot a bunch of pics with it at my
brother's wedding festivities. Worked really well; unfortunately I
can't publicly post the pictures (well, I don't feel comfortable
doing that) to show them off. I'll have to go out shooting some
more with the D80 later. Perhaps when the leaves start turning?

Depends how long you can hold off for, and how much room there is in your budget......

$999 body only though, so would need a bit more for a lens.
